Artist Statement

The collection of artworks from my “Entwined” series are inspired by wanderings throughout the seasons along hiking trails into wooded areas to observe and record the fantastical growth of vines. The images perceived lend to their viewer their stories to be shared and retold with wonder, awe and respect. The vines seem to have a unique language all their own. These cherished stories, from the ancient ones to the very young sprouts, are a connection from root to bud, from vine to human. Though the vines are classified as an invasive species, my art suggests that it is quite the opposite. It is so obvious to me that we are the ‘invasive species” with no appreciation for nature’s art. As their stories unfold, the most prominent element that comes into play is time.

The correlation to time as it relates to both the growth of the vines, the direction they take and to their presence in nature. A sense of respect for time for both vines and the viewer. Within this space, co-existing together in one shared space and time. The wondering of a secret wisdom held within these fantastical vines. Appreciating the complexities that are a natural design yet appear simple and uniform at first glance. This is where my favorite quote comes to life . . .
“the beauty in simplicity – the simplicity in the natural.”

My art often flows from one medium to another as I strive to communicate a specific mood or visual experience. This specific series has taken me on a path of new and unexpected discoveries. The feeling of getting ‘lost’ within a space, as if one did not belong, as if there was a place of existence beyond the known. The concept of humans as 'ephemeral' and how we relate to time and nature is a connecting thread throughout all my work. Within my study of vines, I am compelled to tell their stories, to share their reason for being.
