Artist Statement

Informed by an extensive background in visual art education and museum studies, Monique draws upon her lifelong love of the shoreline as a treasured source of inspiration and material.

Utilizing a medium born from nature, her work speaks to the resurrection and reimagining of nature’s discards into a work of distinction and beauty. Her assemblages create a dialogue between their parts that aim to strike the viewer visually and invite recontextualization. Her creative process is shaped by the intricacies of the wood which ultimately drive the composition’s design. In this way, the artist and the medium continuously work in tandem.

Monique’s work has been exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Kirkland Art Center, The Southold Historical Society, Core Art Space, The Spring’s Historical Society as well as a photo cameo in the Smithsonian’s online magazine. Recently, her work has been selected to appear in Unmoored/Unbound, a juried group exhibition presented by the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) in collaboration with Powerhouse Arts. Her written work has been published online at ArtsEdge Kennedy Center, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Holding a BS in Art History from The Fashion Institute of Technology, a BA from Fordham University, and a MSEd, Monique is passionate about the value of embracing opportunities to learn and investigate new ventures.
