Alexandra McKenzie

Artist Statement

My love for creating art began before I could even form memories, as my mother filled the house with watercolor paints, coloring books, clay, and scrapbook paper. I experimented across several different mediums growing up, but it was not until I was in college that I developed a style for myself. Using a pen, I draw inspiration from natural shapes and patterns I encounter in the world, from flowers and vines to beads of rain and the etching in a tree's bark. My illustrations reflect the inherent femininity in natural life, which can look fluid or jagged; calm or chaotic. We grow unboundedly by choice, rather than conforming to simple expectations. My work expresses my individual perspective of the natural world, and in doing so reflects how I view womanhood: strong, untamed, and multifaceted.
