Lindsay D'Amour Williams

Artist Statement

My work explores abstraction as a site of encounter where intuition, memory, and unseen structures take visual form. Working through automatic and gestural processes, I create drawings and paintings that function less as images and more as transmissions: records of internal states, environmental impressions, and psychic residue.

Rather than relying on symbolic systems or narrative illustration, I approach abstraction as a form of mapping. Each work emerges through sustained presence and physical engagement, allowing marks to accumulate organically. The resulting compositions hover between control and release, structure and collapse, evoking architectures that feel both bodily and spatial.

My practice is informed by a background in illustration and divinatory art, though I now work in deliberate opposition to literalism. I am interested in how abstraction can hold meaning without explanation and how it can be felt rather than decoded. Scale, material, and placement are integral to this inquiry; the work is often conceived in relation to interior space, operating as a quiet but charged presence within its environment.

Ultimately, my work invites viewers into a moment of pause. An encounter with something unresolved, intuitive, and alive.
