Artist Statement

My work combines traditional landscape photography with contemporary portrait lighting to isolate the fragile elements of the natural environment most immediately impacted by climate change. Focusing on environmental change I recontextualize what is visible yet often overlooked within the natural environment by defamiliarizing systems through manipulating familiarity and scale. Carbon emissions themselves are invisible, but their effects are openly present.

Using studio-style portrait lighting, I put glacial ice on a stage and photograph it as a human subject. By isolating fragments of ice and obscuring scale, the images resist recognition as traditional landscapes, or powerful geologic enforcers to encourage a slower, more contemplative view. The glaciers appear intimate and vulnerable rather than monumental, reframing them as a fragile presence rather than distant icons.

By borrowing visual strategies from typological and portrait traditions, I find a tension between what is seen and what is truly perceived, inviting viewers to reconsider environmental change not as spectacle, but as something already before us that is quiet, ongoing, and easily overlooked.
