Sonia Jones

Artist Statement

I am Sonia Jones, a multidisciplinary visual artist and designer working at the intersection of literature, Black diasporic history, and embodied experience. Using fabric, paint, and projection mapping, I create immersive figurative works that reclaim cultural memory and reframe the Black body as royal, expansive, and sacred.
My practice is deeply informed by reading Pan-African, Black American, and diasporic texts. Authors such as Cheikh Anta Diop, Ivan Van Sertima, Martin Bernal, Malidoma Patrice Somé, and contemporary Black design theorists shape both the conceptual and visual language of my work. I treat each artwork as a visual portal—an invitation into deeper reading, questioning, and cultural literacy.
My creative path has moved from early drawing and public arts competitions in the Bay Area to design and UX training through Howard University and a master’s degree in Human-Centered Computing. Today, I merge fine art, digital media, and storytelling to create surreal scenes of Black bodies informed by ancestry, motherhood, and futurity.
I am actively deepening my visual storytelling skills through continuing education, including Peter Han’s Dynamic Sketching course and a 2D Animation Bootcamp with retired Disney animator Aaron Blaise. I plan to further this growth by enrolling in a concept art academy to more fully translate the stories in my head into cinematic, immersive worlds.
