Artist Statement

What initially drew me to sculpture was the textures and compositions I saw in western bronzes growing up in Texas. The surfaces told as much a story as the subjects did. This shaped my own practice. I’m as intrigued by the surface as I am the stories of the people I sculpt. I'm deeply invested in not trying to sculpt smoothly, because I don’t see that sort of perfection in life. I use forms and rhythm to capture a models likeness and I enjoy it most when I can balance the beauty of the model with the beauty of the mark making I use to portray them. Having refined this skill over the past decade, I’m seeking to go beyond making art in such an academic way. I have little interest in creating sculptures like the westerns I grew up around. There are far more interesting stories to tell and extract from today’s imperfect world. Living in Los Angeles, I see a lot of storytelling in film and music. They are my modern inspirations. Now, I’m trying to find a way to use my skill set to begin telling my own stories, putting more of my soul into the process to create my own narratives.
