Artist Statement

The natural world is the subject, inspiration, and spiritual resource for all my artistic work. My journey into artistic experimentation using photography started after retiring from an academic career and finding the serenity to turn the camera toward my surroundings. Sometimes the camera captures the essence of the subject matter in a veridic manner, but often I try to reinvent the image with a painter's imagination. Even though all my images start from photographs, the final product may be just a burst of colors that elusively suggest the starting point. Through various techniques of digital photography, I accentuate the initial image with vibrant colors and strip it of irrelevant features – till an abstract canvas comes to life.
