Artist Statement

My work emerges from the space of zero — the place before narrative, before justification, before the world asks you to translate yourself into something more acceptable. I paint from instinct and lived experience, building a language that refuses compression. The surfaces I choose — drop cloth, butcher paper, reclaimed materials — are not neutral: they carry history before I ever make a mark. I work with what has already survived something.
My practice is intentionally recalcitrant — it does not submit to politeness, refinement, or the expectation that art must be softened to become palatable. The surface is a site of resistance: resistance to assimilation, resistance to erasure, resistance to the cultural demand that Black expression must first become “legible” to be granted legitimacy. The work declines that translation. It stands in its own authority — raw, unresolved, and unapologetic.
Recalcitrance for me is not rebellion for spectacle; it is a form of sovereignty. The marks do not explain themselves. They assert themselves. They remain unassimilated by design. I am not chasing harmony — I am honoring truth. The paintings do not ask permission to take up space, and I no longer do either. They occupy the canvas the way survival occupies a body: through insistence, through presence, through refusal to disappear.
I do not paint to be understood; I paint to exist without negotiation. The work holds tension instead of resolving it, because life has taught me that resolution is not always earned, and closure is often a myth. What I offer instead is evidence — of becoming, of processing, of persistence.
The painting exists on its own terms.
And so do I.
