Artist Statement

Decades into adulthood, I was shocked to discover that I am among the 4% of the population with aphantasia, the inability to visualize. Whereas most people can actually see an apple when closing their eyes and imagining an apple, I only see blackness.

And yet I can conjure the apple. I can pull together a sense of the shine, the shape, the green-flecked red. The weight of it in my palm.

It’s that gap between a seen image and felt impact that fuels my painting. When it’s going well, it’s an exercise in synesthesia, where shape and texture and color go beyond the visual and conjure sound, smell, taste, and emotion. Like in dreams, like a bit of deja vu. Lately, I’m interested in the effects of layering paint and then scraping it away, the feel of a sharp line against blurred color. I’m drawn to deep pigments: the calm wistfulness of red, the humming stillness of neon green, and the undercurrent of hope in deep blues.

I paint to discover how the unseen can be felt and how the seen can transform into its truest, most essential, most visceral form.
