Artist Statement

My work has generally been in photography/cinematography, museum exhibit/visitor experience design, and modelmaking with variations and combinations of all of these. I have worked with major regional museums and attractions providing still and moving images. I have had several exhibitions of my model-making work in the WNY region. My desire is always to stimulate viewers' emotions. My top choice is to either astound them through technique - the greatest compliment is always "How did you do that?" - or by making connections to visual/aural cues that elicit emotional responses in unique ways. I guess that the greatest influence on my work would be described as showmanship, from many different sources, defined as being the use of a heightened reality rather than a more academic approach. I gravitate towards the whimsical, the speculative, the obscure, and the fantastic when permitted (particularly by paying clients). As an example, a major technology company wanted a video about the value of their disaster relief services for clients who might suffer a catastrophic loss due to fire, water damage, storms, etc. So I sold them on having a pie fight. After some convincing, they agreed and a fully-realized pie fight was staged where a complete office environment was destroyed by an all-out custard assault (ten different varieties of filling). The client reported that the video was a total success and demonstrated in a unique way the value of their services. They also paid promptly (and well). That is the nature of the work I strive to create.
