Artist Statement

My work is grounded in long observation and lived experience along the coast. I photograph places shaped less by spectacle than by time—shorelines altered by wind and tide, working boats at rest, weathered structures, and moments of light that appear briefly and pass without announcement. These are not images about destinations; they are about presence.

Much of my practice is informed by a lifetime on the water. I came of age working on commercial and sportfishing boats, learning early how light behaves before weather changes, how surfaces carry the marks of use, and how patience often reveals more than pursuit. That sensibility remains central to my photography. I work slowly, returning to familiar places, allowing subtle shifts in light, color, and movement to guide the image rather than imposing drama where it doesn’t belong.

Intentional Camera Movement has become an important extension of this approach. Used selectively, it allows me to move beyond literal description and toward a more experiential rendering of a moment—one that echoes how memory softens edges and prioritizes feeling over detail. Whether working in color or black and white, I aim for restraint: saturation is often reduced rather than amplified, contrast shaped carefully so that the image retains the quiet authority of what was actually seen and felt.

Across all of my work, I am interested in what remains—after weather passes, after motion settles, after time leaves its marks. These photographs are meant to be lived with. They ask for a slower viewing and reward it with nuance, texture, and a sense of continuity between the natural world, working landscapes, and our own internal rhythms.
