ARVID CHOUDHURY
Artist Statement
I am an interdisciplinary artist whose mixed-media work explores identity, belonging, and the
material traces of cultural inheritance. As the child of a Bengali father and a Latina/Hispanic
American mother, and as someone who spent formative years in both the United States and
Bangladesh, my perspective has been shaped by movement between cultures and by the
experience of living between worlds.
My work uses materials such as spices, milk, ash, paint, and natural substances as carriers of
memory, history, and personal meaning. I am interested in how these materials can reflect the
experience of code-switching, migration, and adaptation.
I am driven by questions about the “fabric of society”: What is the moral texture of America?
How do the textures of our bodies, communities, and histories shape our interactions with the
world?
Through layered surfaces and experimental processes, I examine how private experience
becomes visible in the body, in objects, and in the spaces where people negotiate difference and
belonging. My practice is an ongoing investigation into how we inherit, reinterpret, and make
meaning from the many textures of contemporary life.
