Samantha Alvarez
Artist Statement
I am a Mexican American photographer working with film, using travel as a way to reflect on identity, distance, and belonging. While traveling through Japan, I photographed moments of quiet observation—everyday rituals, pauses, and the subtle tension between tradition and modern life.
Working with film allows me to slow down and embrace uncertainty, letting time, light, and chance shape each image. As someone moving through a culture not my own, I approach photography as an act of listening rather than documentation.
My work explores how cultural memory and personal perspective influence the way we see unfamiliar places, and how photography can create moments of connection across distance.
