Paul Williams
Artist Statement
Through my persistent travels in Japan, Italy, and the American West, I have discovered truths shared by the precious qualities of the human figure, the sweeping scenes of our western deserts, ancient Tuscan dwellings, serene Japanese landscapes, and some of nature’s most intimate settings. I strive to embody such qualities in all of my works.
As a musician and poet, I am steeped in Japanese culture. I plays koto and shamisen and have performed in Japan as well as the greater Seattle area. My poems are often present in my Japanese paintings as calligraphy, an artform known as haiga.
I am an oil painter with a passion for drawing which provides the foundation of all of my works. My enjoyment of mountaineering, music, and poetry influence my perspective.
