Mustapha El Basri
Artist Statement
Mustapha El Basri is a Moroccan-born photographer based in Orange County, California, whose work explores identity, memory, belonging, and the human condition. Working primarily in portraiture and street photography, he creates images that reveal the often-unseen connections between people, places, and lived experiences.
Having lived in Morocco, France, and the United States, El Basri approaches photography through the lens of migration and cultural intersection. His images often inhabit the space between presence and absence, documenting moments where personal histories, collective memory, and contemporary realities converge.
Whether photographing strangers on the street or creating intimate portraits, El Basri seeks not merely to document appearances but to uncover deeper narratives of resilience, vulnerability, and shared humanity. His work invites viewers to look beyond the surface and engage with the layered stories that shape our understanding of ourselves and one another.
