Artist Statement

My work demonstrates how photographic imagery can remain central while being questioned and transformed between mechanical image-making and embodied, intuitive mark-making. For me, my work feels exploratory rather than authoritative. The drawn and painted elements do not resolve the landscape but complicate it, encouraging the viewer to question how the image has been constructed and how the landscape is being understood.

Each landscape is a place felt as much as it is seen. I work directly on and around the photographic print with experimental drawing and painting techniques, disrupting the photograph’s claim to objectivity as I invite a more intuitive way of seeing. The camera records a scene, but my interventions—marks, erasures, layers and gestures—reopen the image, allowing memory, movement and emotion to enter the frame. The landscape becomes less a fixed place and more a lived experience.

The simple, gestural lines carry the photographs mood, motion and energy beyond its physical edge. In that sense, they feel temporal, like an exhaled breath dissolving the boundary between inside and outside, image and world.

The more detailed marks that fill the border function as a parallel visual language. Rather than push the image outward, they frame and interpret it. These marks may feel symbolic as they comment on the photograph, inviting the viewer to read as much as see. The border becomes a site of translation where meaning is embellished, encoded or ritualized.

Through this process, the image shifts from documentation to dialogue, creating a tension between immediacy and reflection: one pulls the photograph into a lived space, while the other pulls it into a system of signs. The image is both unleashed and interpreted at the same time. By interrupting the photograph, the work questions the assumption that nature can be objectively observed without responsibility or consequence. Insight emerges not from clarity alone, but from distortion and ambiguity, where emotion reshapes perception and the landscape reflects an inner terrain as much an external one.
