Artist Statement

My work explores wildlife, wild places, and the human stories that give a place its character. I photograph with the instincts of a journalist and the eye of a visual artist, looking for images that are not simply beautiful, but that reveal something about the subject. A lifetime of travel across all seven continents has been driven largely by curiosity: about animals and their behavior, about landscapes and ecosystems, and about the people and cultures that make one place different from another.

I am drawn to moments that feel unguarded and genuine: a predator moving through dry grass, an animal negotiating the boundary between wild habitat and human presence, the structure of a landscape that helps explain the life within it, or a small cultural detail that says more about a place than a familiar landmark ever could. I want my photographs to give viewers a sense of being there—to experience something of the moment I witnessed rather than simply observe it from a distance.

My photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums, including the Museum of Northern California Art, as well as juried exhibitions at Viewpoint Gallery and the California State Fair, where one of my photographs received Best of Show in 2024. My work has earned numerous gold medals and Best of Show honors from professional organizations representing photography, nature, travel, and outdoor journalism. My images are also featured on HITravelTales.com and have appeared in editorial publications, destination marketing, and corporate installations.

My background in biology and decades of visual storytelling through photography and writing shape the way I work. With wildlife, understanding behavior helps me anticipate rather than simply react. With travel and landscape photography, I look for the relationships among people, history, culture, and place. Whether I am photographing an animal, a landscape, street art, food, architecture, or everyday life, I am looking for strong composition and an honest moment that tells us something worth noticing.

Photography, for me, is ultimately about attention. The camera gives me a reason to look longer, wait, question what I am seeing, and notice what might otherwise be missed. I hope my photographs do something similar for the viewer: slow things down for a moment, encourage a closer look, and deepen our appreciation for a world that is extraordinary, complicated, and increasingly worth protecting.
