Michael Hodgson
Artist Statement
My work sits at the intersection of wildlife, place, and human story. I photograph with the mindset of a reporter and the sensitivity of a visual artist—looking not only for beauty but also for meaning. I have spent a lifetime exploring all seven continents, driven by curiosity and a desire to uncover untold stories about people, wild places, nature, and culture.
I’m drawn to moments that feel unguarded and true: a predator threading through dry grass, an animal navigating the edge of human presence, the landscape’s geometry that explains why life thrives there, or a cultural detail that reveals a destination’s soul. Wherever I am, I aim to create images that feel immersive—photographs that invite viewers to step into the instant I pressed the shutter and to feel an emotional connection to the subject.
My photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums, including the Museum of Northern California Art, and in juried exhibitions such as Viewpoint Gallery and the California State Fair, where, in 2024, one of my photos was recognized as “best in show.” My images have earned numerous gold medal awards and best-in-show accolades from leading professional associations representing nature, photography, travel, and outdoor pursuits. My work is also featured on HITravelTales.com and has appeared in a wide range of print and digital uses, from editorial features to destination marketing and corporate installations.
Grounded in biology and years of visual storytelling through both photographs and words, I approach wildlife and travel photography as a form of narrative—one that can inspire curiosity, empathy, and stewardship. Whether the subject is wildlife, landscape, or the lived texture of a place—history, street art, foodways, and everyday life—I seek authenticity, strong design, and the small moments that make viewers pause and lean in.
Ultimately, I hope that as you view my work, my photographs will inspire the emotions that the best travel and nature experiences do: slow time down, sharpen your attention, and remind you that the world is both more fragile—and more astonishing—than perhaps you imagined.
