Artist Statement

D & M Pottery is a husband-and-wife ceramics studio working primarily in functional stoneware. Most forms are wheel-thrown and carefully refined by hand, with select pieces incorporating slab and coil construction. Surface design is central to our work and reflects our complementary approaches. Mario focuses on layered glaze applications that create depth, movement, and organic surface variation during firing. Debra explores a range of decorative techniques—including sgraffito, underglaze painting, mono-printing, Mishima, and layered stencil processes—bringing intricate surface detail and pattern to functional forms. Together, our work balances everyday usability with expressive surface design, creating pieces intended to be both lived with and appreciated.
