William Waggoner

Artist Statement

My Pop Art pieces are my most personal work, frequently reflecting an event I've experienced or a mood I'm feeling told in the brightly-colored, high-contrast style of classic comic books. (Although I am drawn to the visual and narrative aspects of comics, I am paradoxically not a fan of comic books and their storytelling in general.) But the representation is rarely literal and often shrouded in ambiguous imagery and language; locking a piece into only one interpretation has never been my intent, and I find one-note artwork becomes stale rather quickly. At the same rate, when I explain the ideas and thought processes behind my work, many will find what had been an interesting-looking but emotionally sterile piece suddenly comes alive for them, enriched with far more layers of meaning and exploration than they had previously thought.
