Artist Statement

I am a photographer and memory engineer based in Detroit. My practice is rooted in documenting overlooked moments, everyday presence, and the emotional architecture of Black life. I work across photography, film, drone imagery, and oral storytelling to preserve memory before it disappears.

I keep my camera with me daily. I do not wait for projects to begin making work. My process is continuous, instinctive, and grounded in lived experience. I photograph families, neighborhoods, murals, street corners, and quiet exchanges that often go unseen, treating them with the same care and intention as formal portraiture or institutional commissions.

My work is guided by the belief that appreciation is an act of preservation. By slowing down and paying attention, I create images that function as visual records and emotional artifacts. Each photograph is meant to hold weight, history, and dignity, contributing to a growing archive of Detroit’s people and places.

Through long-term projects like Every Inch, I approach the city block by block, district by district, building a living archive that centers community memory and collective presence. My work exists in galleries and museums, but it is always accountable to the people and places it represents.

I am interested in how images carry memory forward and how storytelling can become infrastructure for cultural survival. My practice is not about spectacle. It is about care, consistency, and honoring what has always been here.
