Artist Statement

Overeducated as a landscape architect and urban designer, who rent an office of 50 people in the bay area for 40 years. In the process of retiring and becoming a two dimensional artist, parenthesis painter. I began a new career as a painter and sculptor. Being trained in the visual arts, and basically drawing and sketching every day for 40+ years, Painting was a logical extension of my day-to-day enjoyment bus after five years of painting, both in acrylics and oil?s. I know can consider myself a full-time painter. as a landscape architect, my focus has always been the natural environment, as abstracted by cultural patterns. Orchards, Vineyards, jet geometry over the organic natural environment is the prime subject of my work. My works very in size from small planner in the field, work up to 4 x 4 and larger contemporary canvas boards. my career also brought me to University of California affectionately member in the landscape architecture department for 10 years that I?ve ended up teaching art, which is similar to teaching landscape, architecture and urban design in many ways. Usually my goal is to create impressionist/abstractions of the landscape, which basically are taking the basic bones of nature, extending it, pushing it to its limits and abstracting in the way that tells a greater truth about what we see not just a photographic representation. My goal is to create an impression of what I want you to see, that is creating feelings emotions, and tells a story about what I put on canvas. Instagram..davidlaurencegatesart.
