Artist Statement

Welcome to our vibrant pottery studio nestled in the breathtaking Flathead Valley, Montana! At Splinters Firing, aka: Ramona Jane Pottery, we are passionate about crafting unique pieces that embody both artistry and meticulous craftsmanship. Using techniques like wheel-throwing, slab-building, and hand-building, each creation, from our stunning stoneware to our eye-catching raku and captivating pit-fired works, reflects the spirit of Montana, crafted by hand from the very first squish of clay to the final glaze firing.

To me, pottery transcends being just an art form; it's a tactile journey of healing that reconciles body and mind while forging a profound connection with clay's organic nature. Being a humble and grateful recipient of the gift of sight through corneal transplants and a complex illness warrior, I aim, through my work, to inspire others to embrace the beauty in life's imperfections and to rediscover the everyday wonders that surround us. As an enthusiastic potter, I infuse my pieces with an elegant rustic charm that captures the essence of country living, drawing inspiration from the simplicity of small-town life, the rugged landscapes that surround my home, and my adventures across the US, Alaska, and beyond.

I have been fortunate to deepen my love for ceramics at Flathead Valley Community College, where I immersed myself in ceramics classes until the COVID-19 pandemic led to unexpected changes. Taking this as an opportunity for growth, I became a self-taught potter, exploring numerous online workshops to refine my craft. Building my own ceramic studio in 2020 was a transformative experience that allowed me to unleash my creativity and connect with others through exhibitions and sales of my work.

The highlights in my studio at this time are our alternative firings; I’m finding great inspiration and embracing this primitive form of Pottery. It's exhilarating!

The studio utilizes electric kilns, Raku gas and barrel firing, and glaze mixing techniques.
