Kathryn Bartholomew

Artist Statement

As a self- taught artist, my relationship to art making began as a private adventure. It was an attempt at processing my thoughts and continues to be a way in which I explore myself as a person. Through this, I have discovered the influence art can have in personal healing and development. I believe the best vehicle for my growth as a person has been learning to paint. I am inspired by the mystery and beauty of nature, by poetry and folklore and humans of the deep past. Often when I am painting, I am ruminating on some un-answerable question about the universe, god/the gods, and the nature of being.

I have studied the power and function of art in community settings at Lesley University where I received a Master of Education degree in Art, Community and Education. I am an educator at a history museum, and I teach art lessons to children. Both jobs fuel my art making as they keep my life full of conversations about human life and history, witnessing the raw confidence a six-year-old can have when approaching a canvas, and whimsical mess-making.
