Artist Statement

My paintings/drawings are personal and narrative. I draw and paint people I know or myself in a loose but realistic style, having always favored the innate textures of mark making whether it is from a brush or a pencil. Recently My current body of work employs layering graphite and charcoal drawings with oil washes and direct painting techniques. I enjoy the layers that are created during this process. I want to allow the viewer to see my thought process and choices I make while creating the image. There are many sayings I have read like Emerson’s, “Life’s a journey not a destination”, and I find that these reflections on life best describe where my art is right now. Each piece is a record of the journey, the process and my growth.
“Never felt So Loved” was created for a traveling exhibition starting in 2019. Artist Kristine Schomaker invited 60+ artists to create art from her nude body. One woman’s journey to accept her body and see herself expressed through another person’s eyes. In the process of creating this sequential drawing of an embrace, it became clear that this piece was also an extension of my insecurities about self-image and beauty. I wanted to draw and paint every part of her with care and attention to beautiful surfaces. Color, brushstroke and pencil lines all working together to tenderly express the ability to love and accept yourself.
