Artist Statement

My paintings develop with formal qualities foremost in mind, in particular Shape and Color. I often begin with a canvas which has been “prepared” with paint that is leftover from several previous painting sessions. At one point I begin the process of pulling shapes from these prepared surfaces. Color is thoughtfully applied in multi layers with a preference for bright playful colors as it heightens the drama while basic two-dimensional geometric shapes unite the composition. From these two starting points my paintings expand with extravagant compositional and sometimes, narrative detail.
