Artist Statement
In these challenging times, I realize, more than ever, what a privilege it is to be able to engage in creative expression. Every time I paint, I see light, color, shapes, and events differently as if through new eyes. Like nothing else, art is a constant rebirth and opportunity to grow. Through Figurative Abstraction or Abstract Still Lives I respond to internal and external energy, emotion, and the eternal human dilemma. Beginning with an intention, inevitably intuition takes over as a sense of urgency ,the need to communicate, and feelings of isolation prevail.
My influences are different depending on the subject, the last exhibit I've seen, the last class I've taken, the news of the week and so on. but
some of my favorite artists over time have been: Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Chaim Soutine, Modigliani, Picasso, Edward Hopper, Joan Mitchell, Alice Neel, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, and Edward Degas.
