Terrance Guardipee

Artist Statement

Guardipee is an acclaimed painter and ledger artist, consistently recognized for both the authentic depiction of his Blackfeet heritage and the contemporary innovation he demonstrates in his artwork. Guardipee is an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Nation who reflects his personal knowledge and experience of Amskapi Piikani history and culture in his artwork. Guardipee's work is created using oil-based colored pencil or acrylic paint on antique documents, including ledger paper, stock certificates and other documents dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. Drawing from historic ledger art traditions, the imagery is developed through precise line work, layered color, and narrative composition. Contemporary materials are combined with traditional techniques to honor Blackfeet visual history while engaging a modern aesthetic.
