Cheryl Tall
Artist Statement
Cheryl Tall?s work uses color and texture to create a surrealistic wonderland, and touches on our search for meaning and place.
She works with clay, glaze, metal, canvas, paint, paper, books, tiles, cement, prints and photos. By using finger marks in the clay or paint, and layers and layers of glaze, paint, paper or found materials, she creates a rich complex surface in her ceramics, paintings and books.
Ranging in size from 7 inches to 7 feet, the artworks have a primitive realism feel, inspired by the artist?s love of both contemporary art and ancient art. Myths and dream imagery have been a recurring theme in much of Tall?s work. By combining contemporary references with stories from the past, Tall seeks to explore the nature of being human.
