Artist Statement
I use fiber media to create alluring yet unsettling sculptures that explore the multifaceted experiences of womanhood in contemporary American culture. I form wool fibers and industrial felt into organic, nature-inspired, robust, swelling shapes that are both seductively approachable and mildly alarming. Rendered in soft, tactile cream-colored fibers highlighted with bold pink hues, the freestanding and wall-mounted sculptures evoke the biological and cultural narratives surrounding femininity.
Wool felt is supple yet durable, familiar and yet mysterious- a fitting material for exploring the contradictions and layers inherent within the spectrum of real-life womanhood. Through my practice I reflect and challenge traditional definitions of what it means to be female: the tender and the tough.
