Gary Mitchell Artist Statement

My aim as a sculptor is to make shapes in aluminum sheet-metal, which delight, inform, and beautify the site in which they are placed. I have learned the skill of working in sheet metal from the aircraft industry. My statues feature the human form, as much as it is possible, with the limitations imposed by the material.

Sheet metal likes to take the shape of cylinders, and it does not like sharp angles. I try to find a kind of marriage with the nature of sheet metal and the nature of the human body. Perhaps, in this marriage of metal and flesh and blood, that there may be the last gasp of industrial progress
