Artist Statement

I think of my painting as 'creative non-fiction.' My artwork describes things I know well-- moments shared in nature, home and garden.

My style leans towards expressionism. My artwork focuses on my emotions and interactions with the world more than it literally depicts subjects or places. It is this space between what my eye sees, my mind knows, and my heart remembers that is expressed in my paintings.

The subjects in my work are sources of inspiration with which I compose and create paintings rich with bias, invention and imagination. I love the idea of defining my subjects with verbs, (such as laugh, soothe, ponder, etc.) Color choices describe my mood, vision, and point of view.

Whether painting in the studio or outdoors, I enjoy the process of painting—actually putting paint on the canvas using brushes, palette knives, and even my fingers.
