Artist Statement

The landscapes I paint are the landscapes of the soul — spiritual and emotional environments that exist within each of us. My inspiration comes from a quote from filmmaker Agnes Varda: “If you open people up, you’ll find landscapes.” This idea inspired me to paint the uncharted emotional states and imaginary dreamscapes that shape our inner life.

I often use nature as a metaphor to explore big ideas in my paintings, to awaken all the senses and to remind myself – and others -- that we a part of something far larger than ourselves. I use vivid color and imaginary scenes from nature to celebrate the strength of the human spirit and the power of relentless optimism. Golden sunlit meadows symbolize peace, tranquility and refuge, inviting viewers to breathe, rest and reconnect with themselves during challenging times. Big skies transport the viewer to other realms filled with limitless possibilities. Crimson leaves and berries symbolize passion, power and triumph, and spring greens evoke hope and renewal, reminding us that growth and survival persist even when life seems bleak. When the world feels uncertain, my work reaches for joy, life, and faith.
I create these paintings on yupo paper, exploring the ways that oil paints and inks flow across its slick, smooth surface to create the ethereal quality of these landscapes.
