Artist Statement

KRIS DAVENPORT TOOHEY

My paintings are inspired by the salt marshes along the Connecticut coast. I am especially drawn to the way light, color, and atmosphere shift throughout the day and the seasons. My goal is to create a sense of mood and a true connection to the landscape — rather than recreating a specific scene or place.

I begin each marshscape with a rose-gold under layer to create warmth and luminosity from within the piece. From there, I build the painting in oils, layering and blending opaque colors with translucent glazes to create soft reflections, misty depths, and an overall sense of movement and light. While nature is always my starting point, the final painting evolves through both the artistic process and my imagination.
