Artist Statement

Through collage, I examine the intricate layers of time, cultural identity, ecology, politics, and memory in my collage works by utilizing documents, texts, magazines, and an array of personal papers. This diverse collection of materials invites viewers to explore beneath the surface, uncovering new perspectives that contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of each subject. Words, dates, and significant events merge into the shadows, narrating the story from a unique angle. My investigations span from contemporary and ancestral portraits, through local, extinct, and living birds, often viewed through the lens of conflict zones, to, frankly whatever subjects strike me in need of closer introspection.

The themes of time and memory are central to my work. Originally conceived as a way to honor my late mathematician father by collaging his personal papers in a portrait that displayed the totality of his life to form his image, I create pieces that are steeped in the past, yet resonate with contemporary relevance. These materials carry the weight of their own stories and histories, which I weave into new narratives.

By incorporating texts and documents that relate to specific cultural contexts, I aim to highlight the diversity and complexity of individual and collective identities. These pieces often feature portraits that blend contemporary and historical elements, creating a sense of continuity and change. The use of culturally significant materials adds depth to these portraits, transforming them into rich tapestries of identity that challenge viewers to reconsider their understanding of self and other.

Ecology and politics are intertwined in my collages, reflecting the interconnectedness of our natural and social worlds. Through the depiction of birds and other natural elements, I draw attention to issues of environmental degradation, extinction, and conservation. The works often situate natural subjects within political contexts, such as conflict zones, to underscore the impact of human activity on the natural world.

The process of creating these collages is both intuitive and deliberate. Each piece begins with a careful selection of materials, chosen for their relevance to the themes I am exploring. The materials are then cut, arranged, and layered, creating a complex interplay of textures and images. The act of cutting and pasting is meditative, allowing me to engage deeply with the materials and the stories they tell. As the collage takes shape, new connections and meanings emerge, guided by both intention and chance. As the physical paper trail wanes in the digital age, these pieces stand as historical documents in their own right; they are time travelers from the past, mirrored in the present, and poised for future contemplation.
