Artist Statement
After many years as a portrait artist, I switched to still life painting in order to enhance my observation techniques and further develop the manipulation of colour, tone, and perspective. This was done to create the illusion of realism. Inspired by the old masters, I often paint chiaroscuro, utilizing the gradation of light and dark shadows to create dramatic illumination of form. I frequently place my subjects in traditional compositions that create exciting textures and reflections. Other times, I use randomly-placed, non-traditional items to create complementary arrangements that document my collection of family heirlooms. These treasures represent my heritage and tell the story of my family, allowing me to get to know my ancestors through observing these beautiful keepsakes. My goal is to achieve even more realism in my work, especially since many items are silver and reflective in nature. Although each painting takes weeks to complete, I find that I achieve an almost meditative state during the creative process, which is highly rewarding. Currently, I exhibit both domestically and internationally and my approach to painting is greatly influenced by the diverse cultures I experience during my exciting travels as an artist.
