John Kaskela

Artist Statement

I like when my art gets a reaction. I want viewers to enjoy the skill, details and recoil (just a bit) from the subject matter. If I can get a 'ooooooooh..' and a 'ewwwwww..' from the same person, I feel I have accomplished my goal.

I have always been fascinated and inspired by nature, science and the things that surround us. In the garden. In the ocean. Under the microscope. In our imaginations.

I use images of real plants and the creatures around us to fuel my imagination. I tend to focus on details, colors and textures. I want my creations to look and feel as if they could exist. I also look for textures and details that might make the viewer a bit uncomfortable.
