Artist Statement

Reaching for a vision that feels like you could revel in it. Feelings of joy and awe are important in my work. Lately the feeling of exclusive luxury has been more important to strive for. To be compelled to roll in the sand or walk in the sunlight. I paint onsite mostly and try complete a painting in one sitting. Mixing fast to find the values and colors that connected with me enough to want to paint a scene. working fast to try capture that moment before the sun moves too far to change the feeling. Painting everyday both in and out of the studio is a primary goal. I travel to plein air events throughout midwest and sometimes further a field. I paint using professional quality oil paints on linen panels. I enjoy artist residencies for the focus and the push to work even harder. Lately I am seeing a new level of expression in my thumbnails that I am reaching for in my paintings. Occaisionally I hit that mark and those paintings stay in my mind as my best work for now. I will not start a painting without first doing a thumbnail to review the value patterns and design and composition. Its always 15 minutes well spent.
