Artist Statement

The act of creating both of these pieces correlates with Neuroarts, an emerging field which showcases the power creativity has on healing. As chronic illness has become a prominent feature of my daily life over the last few years, Kinusaiga and painting have emerged as articulations of wellness for me. Exploring multiple artistic mediums challenges my brain and body to problem solve in new ways.

Kinusaiga (as featured in the piece entitled Stripes) offers tactile connection with my materials...using fabric and tucking it into the crevices of foam board creates a quilted, 3D look and feel. Choosing appropriate color palettes and textures is an exhilarating exploratory practice.

Painting (as featured in the piece entitled Parking Lot Paradise) centers me and loosens me up; to freely let my hand move across the page defining colorful details is not only a joy, but also a meditation.
