Artist Statement

I have always been fascinated with ‘what is,’ and eager to communicate ‘what could be.’ How does an artist – of any genre, in any medium, express the most intense, extreme, in some sense beautiful, version of what they use all available means to perceive? I’ve spent my life developing the resources to answer this question and will likely spend many more years trying to find the ultimate answer ... but I’ve made progress. I’ve studied art appreciation, composition, and achievement of qualities with some of the area’s most accomplished painters, exhibited with (and otherwise paid attention to) a lot of contemporary creators, and concentrated on the artistic traditions that have developed from cave artists to outstanding painters of far more recent times. Through instruction, observation, and a lot of exposure to international cultures and their histories, I’m getting ever closer.

My focus is on the artists of the late 19th/early 20th century France: Post Impressionists, Fauvists, and French Expressionists. The complex worlds of Cezanne to Matisse to Soutine, and those of the artists who inspired them, are on the levels I aspire to: the more color, depth, and animation, the closer depictions are to desired reality.
