Wendell Shinn
Artist Statement
I was introduced to art at the age of five, when my mother placed a brush in my hand. I began as a painter but eventually turned to photography, drawn to its immediacy and expressive freedom. Early influences ranged from Disney to Salvador Dalí, shaping my visual sensibility.
After leaving studies in commercial art at Baylor University, I pursued photography independently while working in the service industry, maintaining a consistent—if intermittent—creative practice.
Following the loss of my wife in early 2026, I entered a new phase of life with the time and clarity to devote myself fully to my work. Now based in a retirement community, I approach photography with renewed commitment, using it as both reflection and presence.
