Judy Catambay
Artist Statement
Judy Catambay is a California-based artist, educator and community artist. Though she began as a painter, she was drawn to ceramics for its tactile nature and the expansive possibilities it offers for exploring form, surface, and space. Clay became a way for her to create her own canvas—one that opens up endless potential for shape and mark-making, allowing her to engage directly with the material in a responsive, evolving process.
Guided by an open-ended creative process, Judy embraces the unexpected with intention, allowing subtle shifts, organic irregularities, and moments of chance to shape a narrative that emerges naturally. Inspired by the rhythms of the natural world, her work reflects its fragile beauty, quiet strength, and the cycles of growth, decay, and renewal. Birds, trees, and abstracted figures appear throughout her pieces, evoking memory, transformation, and a deep connection to the earth. Through her art, she invites reflection on impermanence and our shared responsibility to care for the world we inhabit.
