Artist Statement

I'm Jodi Carlson, a multidisciplinary artist in the Hudson Valley of New York. I've been a maker for as long as I can remember. I create sculptures, collages, and photographs about energy, resilience, and transformation.

Each of my three mediums lets me explore a different side of that transformation: movement and strength in steel, stillness in paper, and the slow unfolding of beauty in a photograph.

My metal sculptures are about the energy of becoming. Heavy materials twist, flow, and dance, showing that strength and softness can exist together. I've been welding for two decades, and I engineer and fabricate every sculpture myself.

My paper collages are where I slow down. In my Lotus series, cut silhouettes of meditating figures and lotus blossoms hold a moment of stillness, and my newest pieces are cut from my own flower photographs.

Every flower in my photographs grew in my garden. I'm surrounded by inspiration there, and these images are about presence, beauty, and the small miracle of a flower opening.

At home, my finished sculptures stand in a yard surrounded by my gardens, so metal and flowers grow up side by side.

The three representative sculptures I am including are in Entrythingy's Portfolio. The link is: https://app.entrythingy.com/artist/349644/
