Artist Statement

My artistic practice centres on abstract macrophotography, luminous sculptural colour, and the quiet architectures formed when internal states meet physical materials. Working with translucent paper, glass, refractive surfaces and controlled chromatic illumination, I explore the moment when emotion becomes visible — not through figurative representation, but through the behaviour of light, pressure, and structure. My work is grounded in the belief that emotional phenomena behave like matter: they compress, fracture, disperse and leave residue, even though they possess no physical body.

I construct each image through a slow, deliberate process of sculpting substrates, adjusting tension, and shaping light until the material reveals an internal threshold. These thresholds — points where something shifts, breaks, or emerges — are the foundation of my practice. They are not literal events, but metaphoric and chromatic ones: a fold that behaves like a fault line, a blush treated as an anatomical rupture, a soft dispersal that echoes emotional release. The resulting works are contemplative abstractions that invite viewers to sense the internal pressures shaping human experience.

My background as an orthopaedic surgeon informs the precision and material discipline in my work. Years spent studying anatomy, fracture patterns, tissue behaviour and the quiet logic of the body have shaped how I understand structure, tension and rupture. Although my medium is now light and paper rather than bone and ligament, the underlying approach remains similar: observe how a system holds, how it destabilises, how it breaks, and how it settles again. This anatomical sensibility guides my visual language, allowing me to treat colour and illumination as if they were living structures with their own behaviours and vulnerabilities.

Influences in my practice come from both scientific and artistic lineages. I draw from anatomical illustration, medical imaging, and the disciplined observation of material behaviour. At the same time, I am influenced by abstract painters and photographers who explore colour as an emotional force — artists who understand that abstraction can carry psychological weight without narrative or figure. My work sits at the intersection of these worlds: scientific clarity meeting emotional ambiguity, structural logic meeting chromatic softness.

Themes of tension, rupture, emergence and residue recur throughout my work. I am interested in the internal moment before something becomes visible — the pressure beneath the surface, the first instability, the break, the dispersal, and the quiet aftermath. These phases appear across multiple bodies of work, forming a conceptual thread that connects pieces created years apart. Although each series has its own identity, they share a common pursuit: to reveal how emotional states behave when translated into material form.

Light is my primary tool and my primary subject. I use it not simply to illuminate but to articulate structure, to expose fragility, and to reveal the architectures hidden within translucent materials. Controlled chromatic illumination allows me to sculpt emotional tone directly into the work, creating images that feel both intimate and expansive. The colours are not decorative; they are structural, carrying the emotional logic of the piece.

Ultimately, my practice is an exploration of interiority — how the unseen becomes seen, how the intangible becomes material, how the emotional becomes architectural. Through abstraction, I aim to create spaces where viewers can encounter their own internal thresholds: moments of pressure, fracture, release, and quiet settling. My work is not about depicting emotion, but about giving it form, behaviour and presence through light.

Across ongoing series, I continue to investigate how fragile states transform when held within sculptural colour. Each work is a study of emergence: a small, luminous event where the inner world opens and leaves a trace. My goal is to create images that feel contemplative, precise and quietly resonant — works that honour the complexity of emotional experience through disciplined abstraction and luminous materiality.
