Marjorie Antaki Matthews
Artist Statement
I am a Marin County native splitting my time between the San Geronimo Valley and Truckee.
Although born in Mill Valley, I spent my formative years in Switzerland, where I was trained in retail window design and display. My fondness for impressionism and post-impressionism began
as a child when I first wrote a report on the French post-impressionist Maurice Utrillo.
My painting style continues to develop and grow; it is expressive and takes much from impressionism. While I work primarily in oil, I experiment in other mediums such as acrylic,
gouache and pastels. Much of my work is done “en plein air” or outdoors, although I also enjoy studio work with still life and interiors. Even when at home in my studio, I often prefer to take my easel outside and paint outdoors in nature. Years of living near mountain lakes and ocean have solidified my fondness and inspiration for painting landscapes and seascapes.
Painting provides me with a way to express my creativity. It is my sanctuary and my creative
outlet while giving me a connection to nature with its unlimited source of inspiration.
