Artist Statement
Faces make up society; faces represent humanity. My passion is to highlight the medley of faces that signifies our personhood. Each pore, wrinkle, and line is integral to the wholeness of our being.
A face delivers silent messages we often do not wish to say or, to hear yet they dictate the authentic feeling of a given moment. They reveal where our hearts lie and trace the challenges we have endured. A face enacts our thinking processes, our emotional states, our histories. When one face meets another, our expression affects other's expression, an exchange of formulaic interaction.
In my graphite portraits, I focus on this emotional barter. I am drawn to the psychological weight that continues to feel beyond surface appearance— the bubbling tension between concealment and revelation. Through careful analysis and reinterpretation, I aim to emphasize the internal truths that emerge involuntarily through the human face.
I curate online photographic references, that resonate to me with me on an emotional and psychological level. I am drawn to faces that imply depth beyond surface expression. Where faces imply beyond blankness and emptiness. Through graphite, I reinterpret these images as emotional studies through portrait making. As the exploration of the face exude a certain psychological allure that only I as the pen holder will be able to translate my feelings into reinterpretation. Allowing the subject to live once more and morph into a new set of interpretations.
