Artist Statement
After a successful 40-year career of photographing people and products, I have gotten back to why I wanted to be a photographer, because I liked creating images, images for myself, and hopefully I could share these with others to show them a bit of what I see, and what I feel when I have a finished photograph of mine in front of me.
I love getting outdoors as I love being in nature. It’s my non-corporate photo studio; it’s my happy place. I do struggle though with wanting things to be perfect. 40 years of Products, Catalogs, Food Photography, Weddings, School Portraits and making it all perfect has done that. I can get out for a sunrise or sunset and see the scene in my head, but it might not happen the way I want it to. The outdoors and nature are not always picture perfect, I must remember that when I’m out photographing. I must continue to adjust from my corporate mindset.
I look at the same sights everyone sees and maybe I can see something a bit different. Especially with my abstracts, I try to look for the smaller details in the bigger picture. I enjoy altering it to evoke a different emotion from its reality. I take them and sometimes change how they really are. I might flip them upside down, turn them 90 degrees, and tightly crop them. Push the colors, change the contrast, turn them into something that has you really looking at them and say, “What is that?”, “That’s interesting”, or a simple “HUMM?”. I want to draw you into the image and really look at it. I don’t want you to look at a photo and say, “That’s nice” and move on. I want you to stay with it and have you engaged in my image.
IMOP, a photograph should either spark a memory, evoke an emotion, or provoke a thought. My hopes are that my photography will do that for you. Connect with you wherever you are.
