Artist Statement
The Human Family Tree / A Walk Through Paradise…seven installations
The Human Family Tree / A Walk Through Paradise is a long-term painting and installation project that explores the relationship between human life and the living Earth through the lens of family. Across cultures and generations, I follow how identity, belonging, and survival are shaped through daily interaction with land, environment, and community.
My process begins with family photographs and lived encounters. Through painting, these moments are translated into something both specific and archetypal—individual lives that also speak to shared human experience. Each figure—child, parent, elder—becomes part of a larger continuum, reflecting cycles of growth, care, and interdependence.
The works selected for this exhibition focus on Indigenous family life in the Amazon. In these paintings, the Earth is not a passive setting but an active presence. Movement through the forest, participation in work, and early childhood experiences all unfold in direct relationship with the land. Knowledge is not separated from the environment; it is formed within it. Children learn through observation and participation, adults move in rhythm with natural systems, and community life is inseparable from ecological awareness.
Alongside observational painting, I often incorporate elements that suggest sensory experience—memory, sound, or movement—expanding the image beyond a single moment. These layers reflect an understanding of environment as something lived and felt, not simply seen.
This work also emerges from a deeply personal journey. Over decades, I have used painting as a way to reconnect with my own early experiences and to understand the impact of trauma and disconnection within family systems. Through this process, I have come to see that healing is not only psychological but relational, rooted in our connection to one another and to the Earth itself.
The Paradise Project is conceived as more than a series of paintings. It is a living system: an immersive installation structured as a labyrinth, where viewers move through stages of human development and cultural experience. Each part of the project focuses on different family lineages, building toward a collective portrait of humanity that spans time, geography, and belief systems.
At its core, this work proposes a simple but urgent idea: that care for one another and care for the Earth are inseparable. The fragmentation of these relationships, within families, communities, and ecosystems, has shaped many of the challenges we face today. By returning to images of daily life—children walking, families working, people moving through the land—I seek to make visible forms of connection that continue to exist, often quietly, across cultures.
Painting allows me to slow down and witness these relationships. It creates a space where presence, attention, and care can be held and shared. Through this work, I hope to invite viewers into that space, to recognize themselves within a larger human story, and to reconsider their own relationship to the living world. --Heidi Hardin, April 2026
