Artist Statement
I picked up a paintbrush for the first time when I retired from a 30 year career in technology at 52. I had always wished I could paint but just assumed I couldn't. After following one watercolor tutorial I was hooked!
And so began my study and exploration of many different art mediums. I love them all but my favorites have become oil, soft pastels and charcoal. Oils are so rich and beautiful and versatile! Pastels are sticks of pure, gorgeous color that you can hold in your hands, giving a different experience than using a brush. And charcoal allows me to explore the drama of black and white, which can evoke emotions at a level quite different than color.
When I paint I see unlimited potential in the blank canvas. I see perfect beauty in the tree I am about to paint, or in the shadow that an object is casting, or in the light on the side of a house, and I need to try to capture it in some small way. Of course the finished painting will not end up conveying all that I see and feel. It won't even come close. So I'll get up tomorrow and happily chase it all over again!
My main goal is to improve my art and bring it to the next level. I believe that the more I improve the better I can connect with the viewer through my artwork. I believe in the 3 P's for this: Passion, Practice and People! With art there is always something new and wonderful to discover and learn, there's endless potential in practice, and there are truly amazing and supportive people to meet along the way who help you to grow. The idea that I can spend the rest of my life feeling this way is both motivating and exhilarating. To be an artist is to be incredibly graced!
