Artist Statement

I am an active art student at Southeastern Louisiana University, concentrating in Art Education. I enjoy working with all media, but none other than ceramics. I am influenced by ceramicists like Sam Scott, Roberto Lugo, Julia Florence, and Grayson Perry. However, no artist has influenced my emerging career as much as my friends and cohorts. As we grow and learn together in SLU’s Department of Visual Art and Design, I am frequently inspired by their creativity and ingenuity. My ceramic pieces explore ideas of religion, mental health, and sexuality. This past year, I have used clay and colorful glazes to explore my complex and evolving relationship with religion. I primarily use white clays or porcelain to explore the contrast of dark and light, as well as the contrast of clay body and glaze. I also used the wax resist technique to create contrast between matte and glossy texture. My pieces are made using a potter’s wheel, and they are glazed with a pouring and dripping technique.
